A very common plant throughout the UK in the Dandelion ‘family’ Asteraceae. Can be annual or biennial.

Leaves

The leaves have pointed ‘teeth’ that are very varied and fairly far apart. Most leaves are basal, the few that grow on the stems join the stems wrapped halfway around them. The leaf produces a white latex when cut.

Flowers

Has many yellow petals that are toothed at the ends and can sometimes have a red to pink stripe on the rear. Very like a small Dandelion flower.

Seeds

The seeds are arranged in a ‘clock’ like a Dandelion for wind dispersal.

Habitat

Can grow almost anywhere with soil, even in sandy soil or grass.

Possible Confusion

Other Hawksbeards or related species like Hawkbit, pictured.

Taste

The leaves are very bitter.
