A common plant from the daisy/dandelion family, Asteraceae that looks like a dandelion but is ‘hairy’ all over except for the flowers.

Leaves

Has long, fairly narrow, bluntly toothed leaves that tend to but more upright or off the ground rather than flat.

Flowers

Has long, thin, yellow petals that are toothed at the ends. The bracts behind the petals are very hairy. Hawkbit generally produces one flower per stem although ‘double headers’ can be found.

Flower Buds

The closed bracts of the unopened flower are quite hairy.

Seeds

Has a ‘clock’ of seeds that are dispersed by the wind.

Habitat

Grows in grass and on grassy banks, prefering lime rich soils.

Possible Confusion

Can look like a slightly smaller dandelion, pictured, that is covered in hairs.
Looks like Cat’s Ears but Cat’s Ears have more than one flower with branching stems.
Other members of the Hawkweed and Hawksbeard species.

Frequency

Common, less so in the far North.
