ABOUT THE COURSE

Thorpe Forest is a beautiful part of Thetford Forest, situated along the banks of the River Thet, close to where the Norfolk and Suffolk borders meet. The patchwork of conifer and broadleaf woodland with grassy verges, provides a home for a rich variety of wildlife and we hope to find a great range of gourmet mushrooms there this Autumn.

Our courses begin with a short introduction to Wild Food UK, what to expect from your day and a brief of the general countryside codes, including our Foraging Code.

Heading off at a leisurely pace around the area, your instructor will teach you how to safely identify the different species of edible and poisonous plants and mushrooms that you discover. This exploration will take about 2.5hrs, during which we’ll take a break for a homemade refreshment, such as our warming Wild Mushroom Soup or Elderflower Champagne!

After the walk we will end the day with a tasty Wild Food meal. This will include a selection of foraged homemade treats created by your instructor, and a dish made with what we have collected during the walk.
All of our food is seasonal, so what you are served depends on what is growing at that time of year. In Spring we will be making use of the fresh wild greens and in Autumn, the array of tasty wild mushrooms that the area has to offer.

You will receive a comprehensive set of Wild Food UK ‘course notes’ a few days after your course. This email will contain links and articles relating to the plants and mushrooms we discovered, or discussed during the day.

We’re excited to share our partnership with Norfolk Hideaways!

Norfolk Hideaways boast well over 600 properties within the county, from comfy cottages to luxury retreats they’re sure to have something for all tastes.
And now bookings on our courses here at Thorpe Forest will receive 10% discount with any Hideaway booking in that area!

So go on, make a weekend of it!

WHERE TO MEET

We will meet outside the Forest Holidays Retreat cafe/shop.

The Forest Holidays Thorpe Forest access road is clearly marked running north off the West Harling Rd, to the East of the junction with the A1066. The postcode will get you there using a sat nav or mapping app. The holiday park is 0.4miles down at the end of a long, straight drive.

Please park behind the Retreat – as you go down the drive, there will be parking for 20 or so cars, to the right, outside the Retreat. There is overflow parking if you follow the road and take the next right after the Retreat.
