ABOUT THE COURSE
This suburban walk is in a surprisingly green area within the M25, it is easy to get to from Croydon, Sutton, Reigate, Epsom and Leatherhead. With a variety of normal suburban parks, playing fields and hedgerows we usually find almost all of the best plants that grow in spring. There is also a mix of large ancient trees which always provide for a variety of fungi.
These courses will start and finish at the Woodman, a welcoming village pub with a friendly landlord who allows us to cook and eat in the covered garden at the end of the course and the use of all the pub’s facilities. This is roughly a mile walk from Woodmansterne Train Station.
The course starts with a short introduction on what to look for and a brief of the general countryside codes, where they relate to foragers. Drinks are available from the pub.
Then we’ll set off on a roughly 2.5 hour walk around Woodmansterne, teaching you how to identify the different plants, flowers, fruits and mushrooms that we find.
We will stop along the way for some seasonal homemade refreshments such as our lovely hogweed and wild garlic soup, elderflower champagne or fruit leathers.
After the walk we will end the day with a tasty wild food lunch based on what we have found. All of our food is seasonal so what we make depends on recent weather and what is around at that time of year. In spring we will be making use of the wild garlic and in autumn the array of tasty wild mushrooms that we find.
After the course we will email you a list of everything we talk about on the day; to help you remember what you have learnt.
